Details
This page is our summary of Wisconsin's rules. Text in quotation marks is the exact wording of Wis. Admin. Code HAS 8 or the DSPS speech-language pathologist page.
The hours are in HAS 8.03(1). Speech-language pathologists "shall complete at least 20 hours of board approved continuing education programs or courses of study" in each two-year renewal period, and "Of the 20 required hours, at least 2 hours shall relate to ethics."
Every Wisconsin SLP license renews on the same day. DSPS says: "The required renewal date for the Speech-Language Pathologist credential is 01/31/ each odd-numbered year." So the next date is Jan 31, 2027. DSPS says you can renew "approximately 4 weeks prior to your license expiring" and emails you how.
Renew online in LicensE. The DSPS fee list shows a $75 renewal fee for speech-language pathology and says: "All Business and Health Credentials incur a $25 late fee if renewed after the expiration date."
ASHA courses count. DSPS lists courses "offered through" ASHA, the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the International Hearing Society (IHS) and NBC-HIS. It adds: "A CE course offered by a course provider other than those listed above is also acceptable, but the course must be approved by AAA, ASHA, DPI, IHS or NBC-HIS."
Graduate courses from an accredited university count too. DSPS says they "are acceptable if the courses directly relate to Speech-Language Pathology."
Employer in-service and other courses. HAS 8.04(6) lists "employer-sponsored in-service training programs" among "Other acceptable continuing education activities" and says: "Prior approval is not required for activities related to professional development or practice, which are completed during the biennial renewal period, and for which the licensee has obtained acceptable documentation of attendance and completion." The DSPS page says: "All other CE courses not meeting the requirements listed above must be submitted by the course provider to the Board for pre-approval; CE courses must be submitted 30 calendar days prior to the first date the CE program or course of study is offered."
Wisconsin counts hours. HAS 8.02(3) says an hour "means 60 minutes." ASHA counts 1 hour as 0.1 ASHA CEU, so 2 ethics hours are 0.2 ASHA CEU and all 20 hours are 2.0 ASHA CEUs.
Hours don't carry over. HAS 8.03(2) says hours "may be applied only to the biennial registration period in which the continuing education hours are acquired." The rule makes one exception, for late renewals under HAS 7.03(2).
New licensee? HAS 8.03(6) says: "A new licensee is not required to take or report continuing education prior to or at the time of the first renewal of the license after initial licensure." Your hours start in your second two-year period.
At renewal you sign a statement that you finished your 20 hours, including 2 in ethics (HAS 8.03(3)). Keep your records. HAS 8.03(5) says every licensee "shall maintain records of continuing education hours for at least 5 years" from the date you sign that statement.
Short on hours at the renewal date? HAS 8.03(4) says you "shall not practice" as a speech-language pathologist until your license is renewed or reinstated.
We read these rules in Wis. Admin. Code HAS 8 and HAS 7, on the DSPS speech-language pathologist page and in the DSPS fee and renewal date list on Nov 1, 2026.
DSPS accepts courses offered through or approved by ASHA. Every course below was listed for ASHA CEUs when we checked it, so it can count if the topic fits, within the rules above.

ASHA counts hours and CEUs. 1 hour is 0.1 CEU, so ASHA’s 30 hours is 3.0 CEUs. Wisconsin’s rules above are in hours. Those are the ones that apply to your license.
About ableU rows. Free to take. If you want ableU to report it to ASHA for you, ASHA charges a Registry fee. You can skip that. Keep your certificate. The hours still count, and you claim them on ASHA's Certification Maintenance Compliance Form.
