How ASHA CEUs and hours work

1 ASHA CEU equals 10 hours, so ASHA's 30 hours every 3 years is 3.0 ASHA CEUs. Hours from courses that don't give ASHA CEUs count too, if you keep the certificate. The full rule is on ASHA CEU requirements for SLPs.

Most of the confusion is in the units. This page covers how ASHA counts your time, how a course gets onto your ASHA transcript, and how to find the 3 years you are in.

Sixteen states have their own page so far. For the rest, the picker takes you to all courses. Check with your state board before you count a course.

CEUs, hours and PDHs

A PDH is a professional development hour. ASHA defines it as 60 minutes spent as a learner. Your 30 hours for the CCC are counted in PDHs. ASHA on PDHs.

An ASHA CEU is a credit the ASHA CE Registry awards. 1 ASHA CEU is 10 hours, so 0.1 ASHA CEU is 1 hour. ASHA on ASHA CEUs.

Short courses round differently. For PDHs, ASHA accepts time in 15-minute steps, with 15 minutes as the least. ASHA CEUs go in half-hour steps and round down, so a 45-minute course earns 0.05 ASHA CEU, the same as a 30-minute one. Courses under 30 minutes earn no ASHA CEUs. ASHA's chart.

On SLP Credits, the Length column is the course time and the Credit column is the ASHA CEUs the provider lists.

How a course gets onto your ASHA transcript

  1. An ASHA Approved CE Provider registers the course for ASHA CEUs. ASHA approves the provider, not the course.
  2. You finish the course and follow the provider's steps to ask for ASHA CEUs. That might be a quiz or a form.
  3. The provider reports you to the ASHA CE Registry. You can't report a course to the Registry yourself.
  4. You pay the Registry fee for that year: $28 for ASHA members, $38 for nonmembers. The ASHA CEUs then show on your ASHA CE transcript.
  5. When the Registry shows 3.0 ASHA CEUs in your interval and you meet the other requirements, it submits your compliance form for you.

The Registry is optional. ASHA says you do not have to join it or earn ASHA CEUs to keep your CCC. If you skip it, keep each certificate. ASHA asks that it show your name, the course title, the provider, the date and the hours. ASHA on the Registry.

What counts toward your 30 hours

You decide what fits. ASHA does not pre-approve activities. The content has to fit the SLP scope of practice, you have to be the learner, and someone else, like your employer or the provider, has to be able to verify you attended. ASHA's list.

Counts: courses for ASHA CEUs, courses that give other kinds of CE credit, state association conferences, employer in-services and college coursework.

Does not count: supervising students, mentoring a Clinical Fellow, your daily clinical work, volunteer work, committee meetings or association membership.

A course counts in the interval you finish it. Hours past 30 don't carry over to the next interval.

One course can split its time between ethics and Content Area 2, but the same minutes can't count twice.

The 30-hour rule itself, with the ethics hour, the Content Area 2 hours and the Dec 31 form, is on ASHA CEU requirements for SLPs.

How to find your interval

Your interval is the 3 years your 30 hours have to fall in. To see yours, log in to My Account on asha.org and open Certification Maintenance, or call the ASHA Action Center at 800-498-2071. ASHA on intervals.

A new interval starts on January 1 after you are certified. ASHA's example: certified in 2023 means an interval of Jan 1, 2024 to Dec 31, 2026.

Yours ends Dec 31, 2026? Start with free CEUs you can still finish before Dec 31.

Your state license counts on its own

ASHA says ASHA CEUs are accepted by ASHA and by most state boards. Your state still sets its own rules and dates, and they may not line up with your ASHA interval. See your state page below.
