ASHA CEU requirements for new SLPs

Your first ASHA interval starts on January 1 after you get your CCC. In those 3 years you need 30 hours, including 1 hour in ethics and 2 hours in cultural responsiveness, self-reflection or collaboration (ASHA's Content Area 2).

Plus what to save, and free courses to start with.

Last checked Oct 21 to 28, 2026.

This page is our summary of ASHA's rules. Each section links to ASHA's exact wording.

Find courses by need

Seventeen states have their own page so far. For the rest, the picker takes you to all courses. Check with your state board before you count a course.

When your first interval starts

ASHA's rule: "The 3-year certification maintenance interval begins the first January following the date certification was awarded." ASHA on intervals.

ASHA gives these examples:

  • Certified in 2023: Jan 1, 2024 to Dec 31, 2026
  • Certified in 2024: Jan 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2027
  • Certified in 2025: Jan 1, 2026 to Dec 31, 2028
  • Certified in 2026: Jan 1, 2027 to Dec 31, 2029
  • Certified in 2027: Jan 1, 2028 to Dec 31, 2030

To see your own dates, log in to My Account on asha.org and open Certification Maintenance, or call the ASHA Action Center at 800-498-2071.

What you need in those 3 years

You need 30 hours of professional development. ASHA calls them PDHs. 1 PDH is 60 minutes spent as a learner. 10 hours is 1.0 ASHA CEU, so 30 hours is 3.0 ASHA CEUs.

1 of the 30 hours is ethics. ASHA calls this Content Area 1 and words it as "1 PDH in ethics."

2 of the 30 hours are in Content Area 2. In ASHA's words, these are topics that help you "provide services that align with the unique histories, values, and circumstances of individuals, families, communities" or "enhance capacity for self-reflection, adaptability, and collaboration". Our short name for these is cultural responsiveness hours. ASHA's rule.

Those 3 hours are part of the 30, not extra hours on top.

You decide whether a course fits. ASHA does not pre-approve courses for these areas.

A course counts in the interval you finish it. Hours past 30 don't carry over to your next interval.

Planning to supervise?

To supervise students or mentor a Clinical Fellow for ASHA certification, you need your CCC, at least 9 months of practice after you got it, and 2 hours of professional development in supervision, clinical instruction or mentorship.

The 2 hours are a one-time requirement, earned after your CCC, and you only need them if you plan to supervise or mentor. ASHA on supervision. Free options: free supervision CEUs.

Your first interval, step by step

  1. Look up your interval dates in My Account on asha.org.
  2. Save a certificate for every course. It should show your name, the course title, the provider, the date and the hours.
  3. Do your ethics hour and your 2 Content Area 2 hours early, so they are not left for the last month.
  4. Send your Compliance Form once you have all 30 hours. It is due by Dec 31 of the last year, and you can send it sooner. ASHA on the form.
  5. Using the ASHA CE Registry? It sends the form for you once it shows 30 hours. The Registry is optional and costs $28 a year for ASHA members, $38 for nonmembers. ASHA on the Registry.

You only send ASHA your certificates if you are picked for an audit.

Free courses for your 3 required hours

These are free and on demand. 5 have an ethics topic and 7 have a Content Area 2 topic.

Topic matches. The Topic match column shows which ASHA area the course topic fits. You decide whether a course counts.

ASHA counts hours and CEUs. 1 hour is 0.1 CEU, so ASHA’s 30 hours is 3.0 CEUs. Your state may count hours differently. Check your state page before you rely on a course.

About ableU rows. Free to take. If you want ableU to report it to ASHA for you, ASHA charges a Registry fee. You can skip that. Keep your certificate. The hours still count, and you claim them on ASHA's Certification Maintenance Compliance Form.

Questions

When does my first ASHA interval start?

On January 1 after you get your CCC. ASHA's example: certified in 2025 means an interval of Jan 1, 2026 to Dec 31, 2028. ASHA on intervals.

Do Clinical Fellows need ASHA CEUs?

We could not find an ASHA hours rule for Clinical Fellows. ASHA's 30 hours apply to people who hold the CCC. ASHA's Clinical Fellowship page lists a 2-hour supervision rule for the mentor, not the Fellow. Your state license may have its own rules, so check your state page.

Are the ethics and Content Area 2 hours extra?

No. They are part of your 30 hours.

Do I need the supervision hours?

Only if you plan to supervise students or mentor Clinical Fellows for ASHA certification. Then you need 2 hours, once, after you get your CCC.

Do I have to use the ASHA CE Registry?

No. It is optional. If you skip it, keep a certificate for every course.
