What happens in an ASHA CEU audit

ASHA picks some certificate holders at random for an audit when they submit the Compliance Form. If you are picked, you have 60 days to send your records. CE Registry users with at least 30 hours on the Registry send nothing.

What ASHA asks for, and how long you have.

Last checked Oct 21 to 30, 2026.

This page is our summary of ASHA's rules. Each section links to ASHA's exact wording.

Find courses by need

Twenty states have their own page so far. For the rest, the picker takes you to all courses. Check with your state board before you count a course.

How ASHA picks people

ASHA audits certificate holders at random. The audit checks that you earned your 30 hours in your 3-year interval. ASHA's audit FAQs.

You find out right after you submit your Compliance Form online. Sent the form by mail or fax? ASHA tells you by email.

Asked ASHA for an extension? Then ASHA audits you for that interval and for the next one too.

What to send if you are picked

  1. A completed Certification Maintenance Record Keeping Form (PDF from ASHA).
  2. A copy of the certificate of completion for each course you counted.
  3. ASHA also lists a "Copy of the college transcript (if appropriate)."

You have 60 days from ASHA's notice to send them to the ASHA National Office. ASHA's audit steps.

Once ASHA has your documents, it says it will tell you your certification status within 2 weeks.

If you use ASHA's CE Registry

ASHA says Registry users with at least 3.0 ASHA CEUs (30 hours) on the Registry in their 3-year interval don't send anything if they are picked. Your Registry transcript is your proof. ASHA's Registry FAQs.

Fewer than 30 hours on the Registry? Then you keep your own records and send them like everyone else.

The CE Registry is optional. It costs $28 a year for ASHA members and $38 for nonmembers. ASHA on the CE Registry.

What to keep now

Don't send certificates early. ASHA says documents sent with or before your Compliance Form "will be discarded." Wait until ASHA tells you that you were picked. ASHA's audit FAQs.

Keep a certificate for every course you count. ASHA says each one should show your name, the course title, the provider, the date you finished and the hours.

Provider gave you no certificate? Ask them to fill in and sign ASHA's Verification of Attendance Form. ASHA says that without proof like this, a course can't count toward your 30. ASHA's Record Keeping Form.

Want a running list of your hours? See the tracker preview.

Hours, CEUs and your records

ASHA counts your 30 in hours. 1 hour is 0.1 ASHA CEU, so 30 hours is 3.0 ASHA CEUs. ASHA says all types of credit can count toward your 30, not only ASHA CEUs. ASHA on PDHs.

A course counts on the day you finish it, not the day you start.

ASHA counts hours and CEUs. 1 hour is 0.1 CEU, so ASHA’s 30 hours is 3.0 CEUs. Your state may count hours differently. Check your state page before you rely on a course.

About ableU rows. Free to take. If you want ableU to report it to ASHA for you, ASHA charges a Registry fee. You can skip that. Keep your certificate. The hours still count, and you claim them on ASHA's Certification Maintenance Compliance Form.
