Speech-language pathology CE requirements in Kentucky: what SLPs need to renew

The hours are in 201 KAR 17:090, Section 2. Speech-language pathologists need at least 30 hours in each two-year renewal period, and "Two (2) of these hours shall be focused on ethics." If you hold both an SLP and an audiology license, you need 50 hours.

Finish your hours by Jan 31. Section 2 says: "Continuing education shall be completed by January 31 of the renewal period."

Renew online with your eServices account, from the board licensing page. 201 KAR 17:030E, the emergency amendment in effect since July 16, 2026, says a license "shall be renewed biennially on or before the due date of January 31 and no later than the grace period ending on March 2 of that year." A license not renewed by then expires on March 3. The SLP renewal fee is $100, plus $50 if you renew in the grace period.

ASHA courses count. Section 3 says a program "Sponsored or approved by" ASHA or the American Academy of Audiology is approved without further review by the board. College courses count too, at 15 hours per credit hour, if they come from an accredited school and directly relate to speech-language pathology or audiology. Courses taken to meet degree requirements don't count.

Online courses have a daily cap. Section 3 says: "Online coursework shall not exceed ten (10) hours per day."

Most hours must be in your field. Section 2 allows up to 4 hours in a related area each two-year period.

Kentucky counts hours. A continuing education hour is 60 clock minutes. ASHA counts 1 hour as 0.1 ASHA CEU, so 2 ethics hours are 0.2 ASHA CEU and all 30 hours are 3.0 ASHA CEUs.

New licensee? Section 2 says a person newly licensed during the renewal period doesn't need CE as a prerequisite for the first renewal.

Audits. Section 6 says "up to fifteen (15) percent of all licensees shall be selected at random" to show proof. At renewal you list your hours. Keep proof of completion for two years from the date of the renewal.
